ABOUT US
The Department of Statistics traces its origins to the year 1957, when the M.A. in Mathematical Statistics was introduced by the Department of Mathematics under the leadership of Professor Ram Behari. The M.Sc. in Statistics programme followed in 1971. In 1973, the Department of Mathematical Statistics gained independent status, and in 1987, it was renamed the Department of Statistics.
The Department offers a wide range of academic programmes, including the
M.A./M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Statistics. Postgraduate students receive rigorous training in data analytics, programming, and statistical software, preparing them for careers in academia, industry, and government. Ph.D. students specialize in diverse areas of both theoretical and applied statistics.
The Department is equipped with two computer laboratories and a dedicated library housing 900 books, supporting both academic learning and research.
In addition to academics, the Department fosters a vibrant extracurricular and professional environment. The Placement Cell, active since the academic year 2005-06, facilitates successful student placements in research institutes, industries, and government organizations. Each year a significant number of students are selected to the prestigious Indian Statistical Services (ISS).
The Department is also home to several student-driven initiatives, including the UDAAN Socio-Cultural Cell, the Heritage Club (both established in 2016-17), and Infinity-The social media Cell (established in 2019-20). These groups play a vital role in promoting the department's activities and maintaining its digital presence across platforms like LinkedIn and Facebook.
